Manitoba became a province in 1870. That year Ottawa sent soldiers to retake Fort Garry after Louis Riel’s uprising at Red River; Riel fled to the United States and Canada established the new province. Many see Riel as the father of Manitoba. The Northwest Territories also joined Canada in 1870.
